After connecting through BNI, Andrew was impressed by Richard’s knowledge and hands-on approach to surveying solutions. When faced with two technically challenging projects a few years later, Andrew approached UTSS for their surveying expertise.

The Issue

Andrew needed assistance with two different projects that both had their own unique challenges. In Derby, a new driveway was being planned, but the only route passed through ten metres of dense woodland, with no line of sight between the roadside and the proposed build site which was an old tennis court.

In Leek, a 17-metre telecommunications training tower required precise foundation planning. It was essential to identify all underground utilities to avoid disrupting services during excavation.

Our Approach

For the Derby driveway project, we tackled the visibility challenge by using total station mapping, 3D scanning and drone technology, and created accurate plots connecting the road entrance to the construction area. The detailed mapping was crucial for the road opening and planning application.

At the training site, we utilised ground-penetrating radar to locate potential underground services, ensuring no gas lines, electrical supply or other critical infrastructure would be damaged during foundation work for the training tower. This approach was essential for both safety and stability of the 17-metre structure intended for telecommunications engineers’ climbing exercises.

The Result

The precise mapping between unconnectable points provided accurate data for the driveway in Derby, helping to secure planning permission for the new access road through the wooded area.

Our comprehensive utility surveying identified all underground services and potential hazards. This ensured foundation excavation could proceed safely while protecting existing infrastructure from accidental damage.
